Nadia Lockyer

In a county of nearly 1.5 million people, southern Alameda County residents often feel ignored by officials headquartered in Oakland. As a result, resources for families in need, healthcare, transportation improvements, and public safety are often dominated by North County interests.

I should know. I’m a county executive. I believe that the people of our community deserve a new voice in county government. Our next representative on the County Board of Supervisors must make sure that southern Alameda County gets fairly represented. My name is Nadia Lockyer and I’m a candidate for Alameda County Supervisor representing District 2, including Hayward, Union City, Newark and northern Fremont.

The election for County Supervisor is only a few weeks away, and I have gone door to door, talking with residents about concerns they have. What I’ve learned is that most people don’t know what the Board of Supervisors does but they are quite aware that their tax dollars too often end up supporting people and programs in other areas.

I am an Attorney and the Executive Director of the Alameda County Family Justice Center. Our mission is to help children, young people, the elderly and families throughout the county deal with devastating problems. We assist victims of child abuse, domestic violence, elder abuse and the break up of families. The program I manage has been recognized as a national best-practice model of public-private partnership. We have been able to help victims of crime and their families cut through red tape to get the help they need.

Southern Alameda County is not immune to problems affecting people’s lives. As the youngest of seven children, a former adult caregiver and 39-year old mother, I know this first hand—ensuring healthy families is critical to ensuring healthy communities. Every day I work with families from Hayward, Union City, Newark and Fremont who need counseling, medical help, housing and transportation. I have learned that my greatest skill lies in bringing people and resources together to help people. I am running for the Board of Supervisors to help bring more resources to our community. I am tired of seeing tax dollars wasted and resources spent on programs that don’t work and in areas that don’t need help.

Now more than ever, with our economy stagnating and the state budget crisis affecting local jobs, we need local government pulling together for us. I want to make this my cause and bring a new voice to the Board—a voice that actively speaks for our community.
